Ok so I want to help you flesh out this thesis and I have some info that’s pertinent. The funk split” aligns with phish entering their “cow funk era” which is roughly 1997 (see Philly 97 Jam). I went to a large state university in the NE and this was exactly the time when phishheads started asking me for mix tapes of old funk music. After that live acts like Greyboy Allstars, lettuce, soul live, galactic etc started to tour heavy as well.

Raised on Phish, Moe, and Cheese but graduated from Camp Bisco into the Funk path. My 69 year old parents saw Moe last month! Love to see Billy Strings, Rufus, enjoy Goose (not my fav), still like Phish. My flower arm tattoos are a nod to what could have been my alternate wook path.

I’m just now realizing I went to Bisco for years where DB would play no less than 25 sets a weekend and I can’t tell you one god damn song actually

I am not a jam band guy but a bluegrass fan and have been fascinated about the history of that element. I think the origins are with Jerry Garcia who was part of the bluegrass scene in the 60s and 70s. The Flecktones were a fusion band but somewhat jam band adjacent. Later the rise of jam grass bands like Trampled by Turtles, Yonder, Stringdusters and then Billy Strings.
