Paralegal here. An acquittal or a not-guilty verdict doesn't mean the defendant is innocent. Both just mean that the prosecution failed to meet the burden of proof required for a conviction. So a defendant may be acquitted or found not guilty, but that it doesn't mean they did not commit the alleged crime. Ask OJ Simpson.
