This is making me question myself, because when I was asked about the wasian meetup by a friend I told them “I feel no camaraderie with other non Japanese half Asians.” I explained how one of our half Chinese half white friend, I felt no kinship with. But our half Japanese half black friend I felt infinitely closer to cause of our ethnicity. I said it was because I don’t feel connected by race but by culture. But now I’m wondering if what you’re saying is actually part of why I feel this way. When I’m in Japan, they totally do separate Japanese and Asian… and maybe I’ve subconsciously picked that up

It’s super interesting to hear it from this perspective, as an American wasian (I also hate that term). I was definitely the white foreign cousin whenever we visited my ojiichan and obaachan when I was kid 😂

As another ハーフ I think it’s more about common experience than labels. If you meet people with similar experiences to you, maybe you can relate. But labels are very limited. And we can have common experiences with lots of people. Like, frankly it’s dumb that people told you you’re not Japanese because frankly lots of people in Japan (3+ million at least) are in the same boat as you. This will change. 25 years ago you couldn’t be black and English. But I remember watching British football 15 years ago and hearing announcer say “the Englishman” referring to black footballers. So ideas can change. The same will happen in Japan.

Yes. I feel this. And I agree I think it’s because I grew up in Japan as a child. I moved to the US when I was 14 and I identify as a hafu, not Wasian.

I’m mixed and from Somalia and there is a lot of “We’re not African, we’re Arab” sentiment in my country which is just not true but did lead to my own identity crisis as well. It’s interesting to hear about another country with a similar mindset.

if you are raised in the west, you take on the grouping that they form for you more easily. Ethnicity is dynamic, situational and based on perspective. while in japan you may be seen as american, in the us they can call you japanese.

I am having similar experiences! I’m not mixed but I was raised and lived outside of Japan over 30 years in 8 countries, which is almost like 75% of my life…. I speak Japanese as well as native speaker and my name and appearance are Japanese, and ppl expect me to be one of them if I meet Japanese ppl. I nv think myself as pure Japanese. So here as well, I always feel the identity crisis. When I lived outside of Japan, ppl recognized me as Asian, Japanese. But the way of thinking and my character are not easily described as one of Asian. Some part of me are also from Wetern countries culture, and Latin countries culture as well.

I agree that’s really interesting, coming from an American wasian. My dad is 3-4th gen Japanese American and I grew up in the bay. Always thought of myself as Asian and actually felt more culturally connected with other 3+ gen japanese Americans than Japanese wasians with an immigrant parent. The mixed Asian experience is truly so diverse!

i’m a japanese wasian that grew up in america but now lives in japan and im kinda the opposite. i forget im white cause its always pointed out to me that im “different” from everyone. i get surprised when someone says i “look white” cause i normally don’t get that and i just don’t agree lol. now that i live in japan, me being mixed isn’t pointed out nearly as much as i thought it would be?
