Will Smith was coming straight off “Independence Day” when he initially resisted another movie about aliens. He worried two in a row would turn him into “the alien guy.” His longtime manager James Lassiter kept pushing “Men in Black,” but Smith still wasn’t sold. Then producer Steven Spielberg sent a helicopter to pick him up in New York and bring him to his house. Smith remembers seeing “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park” posters before Spielberg asked: “Tell me why you don’t want to make my movie.” Smith joked that the unspoken ending was basically: “You know I made ‘Jaws,’ right? You know I made ‘E.T.’?” Spielberg even served him carbonated lemonade, which Smith had never tried. “He had me at hello,” Smith later said. The gamble worked. “Men in Black” opened with about $51M - slightly above “Independence Day’s” $50.2M opening a year earlier - and went on to make about $588M worldwide. Could you still say no after Spielberg sent the helicopter we? 😅 #WillSmith #MenInBlack #Movies
