This is based off a real experiment conducted in real life, it's called Monster Study. It was a non-consensual experiment performed on 22 orphan children in Davenport, Iowa in 1939 about stuttering. It was conducted by Wendell Johnson at the University of Iowa with the physical experiment being performed by his graduate student Mary Tudor. The intent was to induce stuttering in non-stuttering children by telling them that they stuttered, and to stop stuttering in stuttering children by ignoring the stutter and telling them that they spoke 'fine'. The kids were separated by 2 groups and Group A (experimental) was told regularly their speech was horrible and that they stuttered often, as a result, they were ordered not to speak unless this was corrected. Group B (control) were told they didn't stutter and were often rewarded. After the experiment, Korlaske, one of the children in the study, wrote a letter to Tudor decades later after learning about the experiment, stating, “You destroyed my life… I could have been a scientist, an archaeologist, or even president. Instead, I became a pitiful stutterer. The kids made fun of me, my grades fell, I felt stupid. Clear into my adulthood, I still want to avoid people to this day.”
