The concept can be broken down into a few key areas:How It Works (Aviation)The Process: A standard jet engine cannot burn all the oxygen it takes in because the extreme heat would melt the engine's turbine blades. An afterburner takes the hot exhaust, which still contains a lot of unburned oxygen, and injects raw fuel into it. The Result: The extra fuel ignites, which rapidly expands the exhaust gases and propels the aircraft forward with up to 50% or more added thrust. Usage and Limitations When it is used: Primarily used on military supersonic aircraft. Pilots engage it during takeoffs from short runways, rapid climbs, and in high-speed combat situations. The drawback: Because it dumps fuel directly into the hot exhaust outside the main engine, it is highly inefficient and drains fuel tanks at an astonishing rate. Because of this, it can only be used for short periods.
