Italy's highest court has upheld the convictions of five Pakistani relatives involved in the murder of 18-year-old Saman Abbas, who was killed after rejecting a forced marriage and demanding the right to choose how she lived. Her parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, and her cousins, ljaz Ikram and Noman Ul Haq, were sentenced to life imprisonment. Her uncle, Danish Hasnain, received 22 years in prison. The Court of Cassation rejected their appeals, making the sentences final. Saman was killed in Novellara, northern Italy, on the night of April 30 to May 1, 2021. Prosecutors said the murder was carefully planned as punishment because she had rejected a marriage to an older man in Pakistan, reported her parents for abuse, and insisted on choosing whom she loved, how she dressed and how she lived. After she disappeared, her boyfriend raised the alarm. Surveillance footage showed relatives heading toward nearby fields with digging tools shortly before her disappearance. Her parents fled to Pakistan, while other family members attempted to escape through France and Spain before being arrested and extradited. Saman's remains were found in November 2022 near an abandoned farmhouse after her uncle provided information. An autopsy confirmed that she had been strangled. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the final verdict ended a painful judicial saga and declared that Italy has no room for anyone who uses supposed cultural or religious justifications to deny a woman's freedom, dignity and life.
