I've just realised that I've never posted any Cissie and Ada sketches. Oh, the shame! The characters were developed during rehearsals for Les Dawson’s TV sketch show, Sez Les, and were created in homage to the music hall legend, Norman Evans, who had performed in drag as Fanny Lawton in the 1950 film, Over the Garden Wall. Dawson openly cited Evans as an influence, adapting the gossipy, Northern housewife archetype, complete with malapropisms, innuendo, and affectionate mockery of everyday life, into his own sketches Les also drew from real life observations of Lancashire millworkers’ habits, particularly “mee-mawing” (silent lip-reading/mouthing words over loud loom noise in cotton mills), which millworkers then used in daily life to discuss “indelicate” topics without saying them aloud, perfect for the duo’s scandalised, whispered gossip style. Les was initially reluctant to perform in drag, and Barraclough worried about keeping up with Dawson’s ad-libbing talent, but after encouragement from their producer they relented - thank God!
