reminds me in a way of socrates who, despite having never written a thing, is so influential and important to ancient greek philosophy purely by other people writing down what he talks about

Homer (at least to many scholars) isn’t seen as a singular figure but the name for all the poets who combined their stories into this one epic tradition through their telling and retelling of the oral tradition of stories throughout the generatuons

You have a modern take on the oral tradition and view it much like a game of Chinese whispers however when it’s the main method of transferring knowledge they would have developed much more rigorous ways of securing it’s authenticity. In the Irish tradition apparently they relied on rhyme and song.

So people who write adaptations of these stories and alter it are just following tradition then XD (seriously though, due to this how can any adaptation be faithful or unfaithful when the story that we have itself may be entirely unfaithful to the original story told? Even the translations aren't "faithful" to one another- Alexander's Iliad and Wilson's Iliad and Pope's Iliad are totally different. ...and yes I bought all three because there's clearly something wrong with me)
