@kporter.stuff: The single biggest career accelerant I’ve seen for early career engineers over 40 years isn’t a course or a tool, it’s having a senior engineer genuinely invested in their development. The engineers who build those relationships fastest do it by being curious about the other person’s thinking, not by performing for them. Ask specific engineering questions. Ask what they’d do differently. Ask what they’d focus on if they were at your stage again. Most senior engineers want to share. The junior engineer who asks well becomes the one they think of first. If those relationships aren’t available inside your company, that’s what the mentoring program inside The Engineering Exchange is being built for. Link in bio. 🙌🏼⚙️

All these things are what a good manager should be offering up intentionally on their own

at the start of my internship in junior year that led me right into getting hired for my current role at the same company, the first thing I did in the first 6 months was build connections and network with the fellow engineers, lead engineers, and principal engineers. its definitelly the way to stand out and have a massive knowledge and resource base that also can sing your praises when they know you do good work, and theyre an established and respected figure in your field.

Is it a good idea to start my career in GE's Rotational program? it would be 3 rotations in different departments, and a paid off masters

I’ve made it habit to meet and help the engineers that come in and out of my plant. While helping them I’m always asking them questions. Now I’m going to college for Mechatronics engineering.
