For him, there was really only one thing: music. If I wanted to have a relationship with him, I had to make music with him. Sometimes I wished that, instead, we could go fishing together or simply do the kinds of things other fathers do with their children. Yet it was precisely through music that I discovered something unique: it became a form of communication between us—on a very deep level. There was, however, one occasion when he took me on a hike as a little boy. Our path led us through the countryside surrounding the small village of Hirzel. We walked along a stream, and on the way he told me about Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the ‚Pastorale’ and the story he associated with the work. That hike left such a profound impression on me that the ‚Pastorale’ remains one of my absolute favourite pieces of music to this day. At the same time, I made another profound discovery: I experienced the power of storytelling through music. That experience has had a decisive influence on my own musical work.
