I don’t rlly think he truly “loses” the things he never wants to lose but he instead “absorbs” it almost like a black hole or smt, tho I like to explain it as if he’s a empty glass cup. When oda died, he said “save some orphans” or smt and ep 1 of bsd he “saves” atsushi—he basically “absorbed” Oda’s ideals. Just like how he “absorbed” the port mafias when he was in the port mafia. Also the reason why he looks so empty when he’s alone. But that’s jst my take on his character 🥹

as much as everyone wants him back in the port mafia, I think it makes more sense for atsushi to go back. it gives him a new arc to go through instead of a repeat. he has to keep oda's promise, in spite of his own curse. not to mention he genuinely cares for atsushi.
