The lack of discernment is likely what’s speeding up habitus. If you don’t create the distance to reflect on the media and content that is “changing” your perspective then you’ve become a product of marketers - a factor for why people feel “lost”.

Totally. Social has compressed the distance between discovery, desire and ownership. Identity used to be signalled through brands, now it’s increasingly signalled through aesthetics. If the algorithm can help you recreate the look instantly, the brand itself becomes less important than the visual language it created.

You still need purchasing power and capital to be able to fit into these trends or buy experiences that we are still witnessing on social media

As you said it’s performative. Consumption isn’t experience. 2 people can dress the same and have feeds that look the same but come from completely different worlds and experience life in wildly different ways. So they’re not actually the same

I believe it creates the illusion of habitus. It doesn’t give us the real experience of living what creates that specific habitus, but gives you the illusion because you can replicate, for instance the old money aesthetics. So the one that replicates can never truly understand what and why they are doing.

this makes me think how often are the things we consume a genuine representation of our habitus vs grasping to replicate someone else’s lives and habits through consumption in the name of manifesting

I had 3 big life events in 3 cities happen all in one month. Booking and planning was done in a few taps. Fun was had. But appreciation, value, and memory disappeared almost instantly, which has been a sad mystery to me. But this is interesting - maybe things that should contribute to my habitus no longer did, because it was so easy to accomplish them with very little “earned value”. Am i using that term correctly?
