@romania: What do you run from? At Piatra lui Lucaci, above the dark stillness of Lake Tarnița, Romania sheds its modern skin. The road from Cluj slips through sleepy villages and into the old backbone of the Apuseni foothills, where pine resin hangs in the air and ravens cut across the sky like burnt scraps of paper. Somewhere below, Tarnița glimmers between the forests with that cold metallic sheen peculiar to mountain reservoirs. It does not feel discovered. It feels inherited, passed down quietly between those who still understand the value of silence. The lake was formed in the 1970s when the Someșul Cald River was dammed for hydroelectric power, though nature has already reclaimed much of it. Fishermen still drift through the morning fog while forgotten pontoons decay softly along the shore. Piatra lui Lucaci rises above the valley like a slab of forgotten limestone, one of those viewpoints hikers speak about almost reluctantly, afraid too much attention might ruin it. In autumn, the hills burn in copper and rust tones worthy of an old oil painting. Winter turns everything austere and monastic. Places like this are becoming rare in Europe. No curated folklore, no endless ticket lines, no artificial spectacle. Just rock, water, forest, and the unsettling weight of your own thoughts. The Carpathians have a way of stripping people down to something simpler, something older.
