Hi, it's Juliana! They might want children. But they don't want to be a parent. Being a parent means preparing your children for life without you. This is true for every species. It doesn't matter if you're a bird, a lion, a whale, or a human. If you're a parent, your job is to teach your children how to live without you. But narcissistic parents don't want that. They don't want you to learn how to live without them. They want you to spend your life serving them. What do I mean by this? They want you to spend your life putting their feelings, wants, needs, etc., ahead of your own. So it's really common for them not to teach their children basic life skills. Do they do this on purpose? Some do. But it's also almost like an instinct for them. Like breathing. You aren't reading this thinking:

It doesn't matter if you're a bird, a lion, a whale, or a human. If you're a parent, your job is to teach your children how to live without you. But narcissistic parents don't want that. They don't want you to learn how to live without them. They want you to spend your life serving them. What do I mean by this? They want you to spend your life putting their feelings, wants, needs, etc., ahead of your own. So it's really common for them not to teach their children basic life skills. Do they do this on purpose? Some do. But it's also almost like an instinct for them. Like breathing. You aren't reading this thinking: "…inhale… exhale… inhale… exhale…" It just comes naturally. And the same goes for narcissistic parents not teaching life skills. They're not always consciously thinking: "I'm going to tell them to use their hand instead of a sponge." It just comes naturally because something inside them knows: If you don't know how to live without them... Then you have to depend on them... If you depend on them... Your life naturally revolves around them... If your life naturally revolves around them... It's a lot easier to get you to put them first... Does this "instinct" idea make it any better? No. But when you start seeing it as an instinct rather than an intentional decision, it might be easier to accept that they're probably not going to change. If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹
