@inkbyshanai: been doing a lot of research on motherhood and cultural constructs and when I tell you my dissertation supervisor blew my mind w this… I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. if you’re curious, read Yasmin Yildiz’s “Beyond the Mother Tongue” for more!!!! #literature #academia #linguistics #History #bipoc
mother tongue as a consept exists because people speak multiple languages no? if i didn't speak english my mother tongue would just be the language i speak

monolingualism isn't a typical characteristic of European nations either. It's true nation-building in Europe was heavily intertwined with linguistic, but I am not sure if you aren't explaining your point clearly or what, but neither is the concept of mother tongue strictly reserved for one language nor is the concept of "monolingualism" as a feature of empire/state-building in any way Western/modern invention.

your mother tongue is the language you learnt as a child, which is different from your scholarization tongue and the languages you learn later

It is my dream to learn as many languages as I possibly can in the short time I have. The idea that there are people who will only ever learn 1 is kinda ridiculous to me, there is so much beauty in communication.

oooh interesting, ive never given much thought to this concept! its so strange to realise sometimes how many concepts we just take for granted without really knowing the roots behind them; i recently did some research on kinship metaphors in international relations (ex. “family of nations”, “european family (of nations)”, ideas of brotherhood…) and was rlly surprised to see how those ideas can also be traced back to enlightenment-influenced colonialist thinking

I’m not gonna lie, I always believed that humanity would progress and unite if we had one single uniting language.
