As you mentioned that you do not believe in the idea that everything happens for a reason, your first statement actually suggested otherwise. By explaining that some situations happen because people were careless, you were still giving a reason behind what happened. In a way, that means you explained the very thing you said you do not believe in, which actually shows that the idea can still be true even if you personally do not believe in it.
