What I’ll miss most about Europe is the accessibility of third places. So many parks to just hang around in. Libraries are well stocked with ‘mini events’ that are free and interesting.

Hostile architecture also doesn't help a lot of this. If I'm going to be forced to sit on a bench that squeezes my hips too much, or have to stand the entire time I'm at that location, I'll just go home thanks

Related concept: the decline of unstructured time. When people *do* gather, it’s now often for some type of activity (e.g., pickleball, trivia, run clubs, etc.) versus just simply being together at a shared place. It’s exhausting to me.

In Greece I was staying in a small town. In the evening everyone came out to the town square by the ocean. Whole families holding hands, children and old people. No cars, no big impersonal buildings. Just places to walk, sit and enjoy watching the sun go down. Many good restaurants, coffee shops and bars. Often live music.

This is absolutely brilliant and so true. Can I recommend another book? ‘Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life’ by Eric Klinenberg.

But a third space that leads to actual community building and connection must also have opportunities for repeated, low-stakes encounters with the same people. It's not just the physical space, it's what you do with that space. If you go to a park, library, or Cafe, interact with no one, and go home, what's the point? In the past, we had higher bonding activities through religion, political organizations, cultural or neighborhood orgs, YMCAs, and bars/cafes where people were regulars. Third spaces aren't helpful unless they lead to repeated contact with the same people over and over to build relationships. Not just a physical space to be with already established friends.

You are missing a component. Those places listed by Oldenburg as third places were not just businesses then as they are today. They were real community spots. The closest thing today might be something like a rural pub? But all those listed third spaces today are more streamlined businesses now. Even if prices stay low there is a difference between a pure streamlined business and an actual community spot. They don’t want you hanging around. The problem isn’t affordable third spaces but instead the death of community. If we have community people naturally form third spaces out of just about anything convenient. Establish community first and third spaces will follow automatically.

In the city I’m in and neighbouring cities, they’ve made all parking lots next to green and outdoor spaces paid parking, so parks are no longer accessible. Even community centre parking lots. It’s been on my mind so much that the inaccessibility, in particular to cost, of third places is robbing us even more of connection and that disconnection to others leads to more hatefulness as well as higher depression and less compassion and understanding of one another.
