Hokkaido is the northernmost island in Japan, and typically skiing comes to mind - however this island is a treasure trove of places to visit in late spring/early summer. Sapporo is a great city with much different vibes than other major Japanese cities. Day trip to neighboring canal lined city Otaru. Check out one of Japan’s youngest active volcanoes in Shikotsu-Tōya National Park and then visit Noboribetsu Hot Springs which will give you Yellowstone National Park vibes. Hakodate is a hidden gem and one of my favorite cities. English inspired architecture, Japan’s first Western style fort, and some of the best seafood I have ever eaten.
