As a mom of a professional 3 year old hiker, tie a whistle around her bag straps and bells in the pockets in case of an emergency. Teach her that if she gets lost to SIT DOWN and blow her whistle!

Get her a little basket so she can collect all the things or a magnifying glass both huge hits with my 3yr old. also a trash bag to teach them to pick up any garbage they see.

pro toddler hiker mom here: print out or write down some things you want her to look for! birds, snakes, snails, turtles, beetles, mushrooms! leaves of different shapes and hues. awesome rocks. near looking roots. different types of flowers. then take pictures with all the cool stuff she finds. my daughter will go for 3+ miles if she's got a mission and gets to find cool stuff!

Been hiking with my kiddo his whole life! We just did this hike at 10,500 feet up on Monday. He did 2 miles at 4.5 years.

We tell my son he is the captain of the hiking trip and let him “plan” the trail and my husband and I just follow him. He gets excited because he thinks he’s leading the way and we go at his pace. ♥️

I’ve heard it can be helpful to give kids “jobs” while they hike. Thinks like wildlife spotter, cool rock finder, etc.
