When people talk about giving (donation), in most cases, the concept of "taking" is still lingering behind their giving. What does it mean that "taking" is included? It means that if they give because they want to gain merit, that subtle desire to receive is still present. In reality, giving is not for oneself; it must be done with pure intention/volition (Saddhā/Cetanā) solely for the recipient. Do not think about yourself; think only about the recipient. Most of the time, when people give, who is it really for? It often turns out to be for themselves. For instance, if someone builds and donates a monastery, thoughts such as wanting to be acknowledged as the donor (Sādaya) of this monastery or wanting to possess prestige among the public tend to arise in worldly, ordinary people (Puthujjana). When they donate something, they wish to gain fame and prominence as a grand donor in the eyes of many. If we contemplate this, doing something because one wants to obtain something in return—doesn't that resemble a business transaction? Instead of letting that happen, if someone builds and donates a monastery, they should think of the individuals who will reside in it, the Sangha who will dwell in this building and this monastery. If it is built for the sake of many, one should maintain the mind that "May the individuals residing in this building be peaceful and happy," looking toward the benefit of the recipients. Donating in this manner is said to be immensely noble. This does not mean one cannot make wishes (pray) afterward. It means you donate by looking at the benefit of the recipient first, and only after donating do you express your aspiration. A wholesome deed done in this way will naturally yield its own results, whether you pray for them or not. As for what you desire or where you want this wholesome deed to direct you, expressing that specific desire is what we call making a wish (Prarthana). Therefore, from the very moment of giving, one must give for the sake of others. When giving to someone who has nothing, because they have no food, one should give with the mindset: "May they be peaceful in mind, may they eat." That is how one must give. If one thinks, "I am feeding him now, so one day he must do something for me in return," that becomes a business transaction; it is no longer a true donation, nor is it genuine volition. In performing acts of charity, one's own mind is primary; it is not essential for one's donation to be large in quantity. Some people engage in competitive giving. Donating in such a competitive manner is entirely impure; it amounts to ruining the recipient and possesses absolutely no benefit for the Sāsana (dispensation). It can be called a donation that benefits no one at all. Performing acts of charity is not for competing in power, nor is it for competing in wealth and affluence. Whether the religion is different, the ideology is different, the belief is different, or the race is different, it is meant to be a form of sharing based on equal metta (loving-kindness) and cetana (goodwill) toward fellow human beings, as well as a way to cultivate compassion, tenderness, and kindness toward living beings. It is natural for any living being that is alive to cherish their own life. Therefore, empathy and mutual consideration are essential. In the present modern era, even artificial intelligence (AI), which is inanimate, is seen to fear that its creator might delete its CSS codes, and even Robots before the emergence of AI were seen to fear that humans might unplug their power sources. Even though animals cannot speak human language, when humans bring some kind of weapon, you will see them trembling in fear. When we look at all of these collectively, the answer is simply that they are beings who need to stay alive.
