This is why I'll always advocate for a free and healthy school lunch. Asking parents to pay for food for a place the children are required to be is wild anyway, and for some of these kids it's the only meal they get.

I clear out the lunch debt at the elementary school I went to 50 years ago. I still live in my hometown and know that that school exists in one of the oldest parts of town. Older homes. Cheaper homes. Last year the total was $750. This year $400.

My town does this every year! Lots of people come together and raise money to pay off debt and make sure kids have money for future lunches

i remember going to my school counselor about being SA by another student and when she made me call my parents to pick me up she asked me to remind them of my school lunch balance .... still think about that shi all the time

Several years ago a friend's son's school sent a flyer home that they would have a pizza party for everyone with a zero lunch balance. So basically punishing and alienating the kids that were less fortunate. She was so filled with rage that she fundraised and paid the bill for the whole school lunch balance.
