keep in mind the d day landings were a massive disaster. the beach defences were supposed to have been destroyed by the navy and air crafts, but they missed the targets

In a lot of WW2 movies and videogames you see them use a smokescreens to cross open terrain, I've always wondered why smoke wasn't used on D-Day.

In interviews with DDay veterans they often mention how they hestitated to pull the ramp release because they knew it was their only cover from what was coming at them .

Okay, but why not put a short "roof" on the ramp, so it will be 90° to the enemy and provide cover, so the people still inside are not exposed, as soon as the ramp drops?

What I don't understand is why not having designed the landing crafts with a minimum of a kind of a mobile shield to protect the soldiers getting out of it ?Maybe it could have saved more...
