Shinjis character puts too much weight on the individual mind while underestimating how strongly people are shaped by their environment. His fear, insecuritys, and self doubt are not isolated traits that exist on their own. In reality these things are formed through neglect, emotional absence, trauma, and constant psychological pressure from the people around us. Without these external conditions, those inner states would not develop at all. Yet the story is often read as if it were mainly about personal failure, if someone is struggling, the cause is framed as something inside them. What makes this even more important is that this mindset is not accidental. People often adopt narratives that place responsibility on the individual, treating his situation as simple personal weakness, even though they should recognize that it's unrealistic. It's almost as if the character is reduced to a moral lesson that fits a familiar worldview rather than a realistic depiction of human development. human environments are shaped by competition for status, influence, and control. Even if it is not fully conscious, people compare themselves, protect their position, and can feel threatened by the potential of others. This can lead to subtle forms of limiting others or discouraging growth without it ever being openly acknowledged. The character writing avoids the uncomfortable recognition of power, influence, and the ways people shape each other indirectly. It can also function as a form of moral self elevation, where someone reframes their own experience as proof that success is purely personal effort, "I suffered and I made it, so if others do not, it is their fault". This creates a simplified moral hierarchy that protects the self image. That's the only explanation for me, why people like this character so much. Because it fits in their fucked up world-view. Shinji feels less like a realistic psychological portrait and more like a closed system where everything is reduced to the inner world of the individual. It disconnects personal suffering from the conditions that produce it.
