@footleg22: Alcoholic cirrhosis is often accompanied by family estrangement. This story is a good example of how music-thanatology can forge a container for some of the emotional processing that often needs to happen at the end of life. This son will also receive support from our bereavement department after his dad dies. For more about music-thanatology, check out MTAI.org, and if this work calls to you, perhaps you should apply to the school, at accordaschool.org - or hit me up with any questions. I’m happy to help. Please note: ALL patient identifiers and any Protected Health Information (PHI) has been modified in these stories to ensure the privacy and anonymity of those involved. #atdeathsdoor #musicthanatology #endoflifecare #alcoholic #estrangement
If we’re only kind to people we think deserve it, that isn’t kindness

The son was too angry to say goodbye to his dad. Your music gave him the strength to tune into the moment, grieve, begin the process of forgiveness and share a final moment with his dad. What a blessing that he will never regret that they shared that last moment.

as someone with a dad that i never knew sober and in & out of the icu and the only one that has fought for him & having to go no contact just in january of this year after 27 years - this was a hard watch but im across the country and he has no one. i’m left conflicted on this - thank you for giving his child what he needed so that he could finally not just hold his hand, but to also let it go. just know you’re doing exactly whatever that nod meant and that he accepted in that moment. 🫂

As someone who has an alcoholic father; his nod was him thanking you and your presence for being there so he could have a moment of quiet and peace with his father one last time.

As someone who has lost parents (dad and step mom) and has an alcoholic mom, I’ve gotta say, this is one of the most valuable, beautiful, and meaningful careers anyone could have but it takes a very special, kind, and intuitive person to do it. I’m not religious but you’re like a literal angel guiding the patients and their family through the last journey of life. Amazing

As the child of an alcoholic, I can imagine exactly how conflicted the son felt. Knowing a parent had a disease, yet the horrible memories vying for any empathy he may try to muster.

Sometimes the living are grieving the relationship they didn't get to have more than they are grieving the person lost. It is a different type of grief but it is still grief.

My child believes I am a terrible person. I have late diagnosed Autism and ADHD. As a single parent who raised two children, alone, I did the best I could. My child hates me anyway. 🤷♀️

Your playing is beautiful. People with addiction cause suffering but they also suffer too. It is true, all souls have redeeming qualities. Life can be painful, complicated and also beautiful. You did well. Thanks.

I worked with adults with disabilities and one of my favorite clients, Maureen, was blind and deaf and loved to dance. she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and went pretty quickly. she had music therapy once a week and he came the night she died and played Here Comes the Sun on his guitar. I swear we all felt her dance out of the room. ty for what you do
