@popdetective: Dirty Dancing is about women’s reproductive rights and the message is still revolutionary almost 40 years later. #dirtydancing #womensrights #80smovies #feminism #dancing

I remember watching this as a teen and thinking “we have come so far!” To now in my 30s and I have less rights than I did at 16

My mother took me & my friend Glenny to go see "Dirty Dancing" when we were 10 years old. We sat separate from her in the theater, and watched the whole movie transfixed. When we got to the car my mom said, "Did y'all understand what was going on?" We said, " Yes?" She said, " Did you understand what was happening w/ Penny?" We said we did, maybe, probably. This opened the door for my mother to explain about abortion being illegal in the U.S., about how dangerous abortions had been for some women, and about Roe v. Wade. I will never forget that conversation, how deftly my mom handled it, and how much I learned because of "Dirty Dancing." ❤️

My republication mother started letting me watch this when I was six. She wonders why I’m pro-choice now

Also, the fact we had Swayze’s character being loving and supportive as an actual friend.

When I was really young and watched this for the first time I didn’t understand why the characters were so worried because I didn’t understand that abortion had at one point been illegal 🫠

When I tell people this is my favorite movie a lot people think it’s because it’s a chick flick, but it’s actually very progressive for its time. It was also written by a woman!

I always appreciated how dr housman was with penny, he took care of her and reassured her with no judgement

I have a social justice/gender studies degree with a concentration in pop culture and I could talk about how amazing Dirty Dancing is for longer than it would take to watch Dirty Dancing twice. I LOVE this movie.

I like how it’s not a question wether she should get and abortion or not, it’s about how safe the procedure needs to be

This a completely new perspective for me. I never saw the importance of the abortion. Thank you for opening my eyes :)

The most famous part of the movie demonstrates that in another way too. When Swayze’s character says, nobody puts baby in a corner. It means, she has the right to choose her own destiny.

Yesss! I was a student tour guide at Mount Holyoke (“baby’s going to Mount Holyoke in the fall”) and I would always bring up how the themes of the movie align so well with the ethos of my college. We also have a tradition where the movie is screened at the beginning of every school year in our outdoor amphitheater

My other favorite thing is that the dad apologizes to Johnny when he realizes "I'm responsible for her." didn't mean it was his baby. it just meant he cared about her

This is why I love this movie. I think the character of baby is still very prevalent today, and her growth to realising her privilege and using it to help others- even when it inconveniences her- is something many people today can aspire to. Not to mention all the subtle political commentary!
