On certain Hyundai/Kia GDI's, be wary of the high pressure fuel pumps leaking into the crankcase as well. I had one in a few weeks ago for a check engine light and the car would misfire on start up (especially cold). Had a code for AFM rich bank 1, so I headed to the fuel trim data and long term was -25% and the short term was -100% at idle (insane). Our shop recently did an oil change and I checked the oil, it was dark and very, very watery looking... also smelled odd. I then pulled the oil fill cap off and it was pure fuel vapors, it was very strong smelling. I eliminated any vacuum leak and EVAP purge as the potential culprits was left with basically the HP fuel pump or leaking injectors (which I suspected), so I endoscoped the cylinders and looked for evidence of the injectors leaking, and didnt see anything despite the piston tops looking very, very wet. Plugs were shockingly not fouled with fuel badly. My last step was recording fuel pressure at idle then immediately after shut off (which was about 550 psi at the rail according to scan tool data), then let it sit and I went to lunch. When I came back, the fuel pressure at the rail was 74 psi. Just to see evidence on the data, I ran the engine with the PCV hose blocked off (the suction side, from the valve cover to the intake) and watched the fuel trims immediately returning to normal. Bingo.
Customer ended up approving replacement of the HP fuel pump and an oil change (recommended because the oil was so contaminated with fuel), as well as a tune up (spark plugs due by mileage). Took it for a good, long drive and the car ran beautiful with normal fuel trims once again.
Fuel trims seem boring and dull, but once you understand how to use them, they're one of the best data points that modern cars provide.
