Initially I used to only Kudos fics that I liked/loved but then I realized whether I like it or not I appreciate the effort the authors put in. So I’ll kudos every fic I’ve read. I’ll need to dislike a fic extremely for me to leave without leaving one.

A kudos is the forehead kiss I give every fic that I get to the point where I see the button. If I don’t like a fic and don’t finish the one shot/first chapter it doesn’t get a kudos. Everything else does.

Fanfic is COMMUNITY not CONTENT. If you want authors to keep writing good fics you MUST participate. Kudos is the bare minimum. Leaving a comment, sharing with friends, INTERACTING. That’s what builds a fandom. You cannot just passively consume if you want there to be more good stuff

When I was a young teen I was SO stingy with my kudos I genuinely thought if I have something kudos it should be an event and people would notice the user that never gives kudos give a kudos... and after 4-5 years I realized that was dumb and everyone who puts in the effort to write something that you liked should get a kudos, literally costs nothing and gives someone else a little joy

As a writer, I think I’m the outlier but I would prefer readers to kudos if they enjoyed the fic. It helps me to feel out how people like the story.

Kudos and comments are my “payment” to the author. It also carries the perk of letting me know I already read something. It’s a button, right there, it doesn’t cost anyone anything, it’s not limited, just hit it. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to click.

If I consumed free content on ao3 regardless if I liked it or not they still get a kudos, because writing fics is hard and i respect the craft. 💅

I agree with you 💯. Those who do not kudos are selfish and most probably not a writer. I curate my AO3 reading list very well, thus know I’m going to like the story. So kudos and comments are the bare minimum I could do for the author who gave the gift of the story.

If I only kudos because I want to reread it, I'd never find it again. For me, kudos are bare minimum as a reader. I'm working to comment more. Bookmarks are fics I loved and want to reread/save.

as someone who mostly sorts by kudos, a kudos is a recommendation to other readers of course if I'm reading new fics or something for a smaller fandom I'll probably kudos it, but if it's the #7 highest rated fic for a pairing and I didn't like it that much I'm not going to kudos it, because I wouldn't recommend it to someone else over a different fic that I did prefer and did kudos

I honestly have never even thought about this. I don't use AO3 often but when I do, I never really engage but you're right, I should be leaving at least a kudos so the writer knows I enjoyed it. I just never thought about engagement etiquette on AO3 at all. 😬

lowkey why are you so mad?? I do think its fine to bring up the conversation about why people do or dont kudos a fic and or commenting and why those things are important to fandom eco systems but like. this is a little silly to be SO heated over. you said hitting kudos is the bare minimum and I simply disagree lol. I, especially as an author who treasures kudos/comments/bookmarks, do not think its bad to leave or not leave kudos/comments on things based on your own preferences. I think to your point of people not giving kudos due to fear that that is a problem but that has more to do with the morality policing conversation than like. personal preferences
