@playeverydayx: My biggest weakness point is not knowing any scales* 🫣 well technically I have basic knowledge of how major/minor scales work, which is why I can kind of fumble my way through a solo. But I never learned the shapes of the pentatonic scale across the fretboard, let alone any of the modes 🤷♂️ I want to, but I just haven’t found the time. What do you think of this cool emo piece I just improvevd? 🫡 #guitarsolo #musictheory #raybanmeta #emo #guitar
I hate how the community always shames people for not knowing everything about guitar. I think the best part about just playing is it allows for a lot of freedom of playing randomly

Scales literally takes less than an hour to understand, all the practice is just drilling the shapes into your brain. Guitarscale.org son

You are using a scale you just don’t have it identified, a lot is just by ear

In my opinion learning some theory has made me less creative always looking for boundaries to play within I know people don’t agree with that but that’s what I experience in my opionion

Bro, you literally are playing scales. Most scales are just fragments of chords anyways. Take those notes and find them elsewhere on the neck. Then play all of them linear, that's a scale. I think your in drop A[I'm not great with stuff beyond D] So that would be Major/Lydian. That doesn't matter though, you have great approach and feel.

music theory was never needed for guitarists.
musicians are people who explore all instruments. the point of making great riffs is how grounded a person is in the fretboard of a guitar. knoledge of music theory is not needed because it doesn't help.
and to "some" people who might reply against my point. im saying this as a person who knows theory.

Yet, the best guitarist ever never played by the rules of scales. They improvised and tried different things. They got creative and it paid off.

You dont need scales if you can be creative like that. It seems like you understand the principle of scales from what I can hear.

You’re good man. You’re already playing the major pentatonic without knowing it.

To me, that's where the difference between a guitarist and an artist lies. A guitarist is a master of their instrument in every aspect, technique, performance, and music theory. An artist, on the other hand, might only know the basics and not really be a guitarist in the traditional sense, but they bring creativity, composition, and originality to their instrument.
One can be the other, though. They're complementary, and each one only makes the other better.

Scales are overrated. No one remembers or can hum a well run scale solo. But a riff? That’s where the actual music lies.
