@themichiganbrief: Detroit neighborhood economic development is finally getting a serious conversation — and Mary Sheffield is leading it. The pitch: stop making Detroiters drive to the suburbs for things they should be able to get at home. Support the businesses that have held it down for thirty, forty years first. Help smaller businesses scale. Then bring in the regional and national retailers that fill out a neighborhood. And the backend matters too — zoning, permitting, licensing. Sheffield's administration wants Detroit to be the easiest place to start and grow a business. Less bureaucratic friction, more predictability, faster timelines. This isn't a new idea, but it's one Detroit has struggled to execute for decades. The difference here is whether city hall actually removes the barriers that have historically made it harder to open a shop on the east side than in any suburb on 8 Mile. Property tax reform conversations with state legislators are apparently in the mix too. That one will matter more than most people realize for long-term neighborhood stability. Detroit deserves to shop, eat, and live without leaving Detroit to do it. #DetroitBusiness #DetroitNeighborhoods #MarySheffieldDetroit

Madam mayor can you now look into getting investors to invest in putting another grocery store on Gratiot and Van Dyke? It’s a win win for everyone

She says Detroit doesn’t need the suburbs. But the majority of the people that work in the city are from the suburbs and she’s collecting those tax dollars off of their income. Time for Detroit stop capturing the tax income of people that don’t live there.

National retailers require minimum amounts of parking. It’s not worth losing more of our city to parking. Small businesses all the way.
