Many shoes today are designed more for fashion than function—especially when it comes to the shape of the toe box. Interestingly, most baby shoes are made to match the natural anatomy of a baby’s foot: wide and splayed at the toes. But by age three or four, shoes begin to narrow, especially at the front, no longer resembling the natural foot shape. This marks the beginning of a widespread problem. . The front part of the shoe, called the toebox, often becomes increasingly pointed and restrictive, cramming the toes together. This design has nothing to do with performance or foot health and everything to do with outdated fashion standards—ones that have been around for centuries. Historically, narrow shoes symbolized wealth and status, while wide, functional shoes were associated with the working class. . That legacy continues today, even in athletic footwear. A narrow toebox prevents the foot from naturally spreading during movement, limiting stability and contributing to dysfunctional movement patterns in activities like walking, running, squatting, and deadlifting. Over time, this can also lead to deformities like bunions—not because of genetics, but because of long-term use of poorly shaped shoes that alter joint alignment and foot mechanics. . The answer? Find shoes that have a toe box shaped like feet!
