@millennialrx: Patient ridiculed by pharmacy for wanting to get a brand name medication instead of a generic. #retailpharmacy #pharmacy #pharmacist #adhd #millennialrx
For me it’s the loud conversations from the staff for the entire pharmacy to hear. I’ll never understand why it’s not a HIPAA violation.

So basically, easier way around this is for the doctor to specify on the script that it’s brand name necessary. If the generic is covered but you want the brand, a couple of things can happen. You can end up with a higher copay for the brand or depending on the insurance, if it’s not brand name necessary and you still fill for the generic, the pharmacy could get a charge back for lack of documentation and lose out on the total cost of script

pharmacists really have it ingrained into them that generic drugs are the same as name brand, but they really should know that the filler ingredients can cause issues.
I've had similar issues with another type of med. the generic would cause me to be in a lot of pain but the name brand actually does its job.
it was a whole big deal to keep asking for name brand

Isn’t that a simple “dispensed as written” for a brand name script.

she needs to ask her dr to put a daw1 on there cause then they HAVE to fill it that way cause the dr is writing it that way..

As an aussie I still domt understand the concept of WAITING for your meds. Here you just take your script in and they fill it in like 5 to 10 mins. If they don't have your meds in stock you just go somewhere else. The pharmacies aren't in charge of our scripts, we are. Does it have something to do with your insurance system in the US? Like can you only get your scripts filled at specific pharmacies because of your insurance? Here your medication is either subsidised or its not, doesn't really matter what pharmacy you go to.

As a person with ADHD, I cannot submit my prescription until three days before I need it renewed. I cannot reliably drive without my medication. It often takes the full three days for them to message. Me saying my prescription has been filled so by the time I go in if they were to tell me to come back the next day, I will have to find a ride to be able to come the next day.

Generic is not the same. I don’t care what anyone says. They started giving me generic Vyvanse without telling me and I knew there was something different about it and checked the bottle. I was getting MASSIVE migraines on it. I’ve since found another generic brand that isn’t as bad- but they’re NOT THE SAME. And pharmacies make me scared to speak up because I need my meds, even if I have to deal with a migraine. It sucks.

How can a generic brand give you side effects more than a name brand? aren't they supposed to be the exact same medication? I dont understand

That’s so weird. With our pts on stimulants for ADHD we try to let them know that different brands have the possibility to have different effects and if they prefer the brand name or a specific generic to let us know so we can put a note on file and keep it stocked for them….

I am SO TIRED of being gaslit about generics. I take Vyvanse. The generic hits me like a truck, is super intense, and lasts 4-6 hours. The same dosage of the name brand is mild and lasts 12-14 hours. There’s obviously SOMETHING that is causing it to be processed super quickly in MY BODY. They do the tests to make sure digestion speed/intensity is close to the name brand in a lab environment, which gives a good general idea. But every BODY is different and some people process things differently than others. And pharmacists should KNOW THAT!

As a celiac. Generics can have gluten. I can’t believe they are like this. I’m lucky my pharmacist isn’t like this at all. But also to be upset someone’s asking for the brand is wild. They make more money.

Ive been taking vyvanse for 15 months now, and I've only been able to just pick it up without a whole ordeal twice. 😑
sometimes it's several hours delayed. sometimes it's days. I hate it.

Patients could have side effects to inactive ingredients in the generic as well. I’ve been a tech for a long time and an example would be synthroid it does make numbers differ from the generic as well, and the attitude I would never. I do take the patients side on this, I’m sorry.

I’m sorry. I’m sick of my ADHD meds being scrutinized so hard when people diagnosed multiple Xanax a day are fine. I’m sick of pharmacists being able to turn me away as a new patient when they have it in stock but I haven’t filled with them before. They act like the prescription isn’t coming electronically from a doctor, this is not a written note from my mother. Put the fries in the bag.

I had a pharmacist recently tell me that “the dea has flagged” my son when I picked up his adderall prescription. Why? Because I consistently fill his rx that is written by the same doctor, at the same pharmacy (for over a year) “early” or every 28 days…(which is the advice given to me by the previous pharmacy manager)….

I actually have a good pharmacist story. I lost my insurance and I’m diabetic . I tried to refill my prescription for my insulin but it was $300 without insurance. I went into the pharmacy and spoke with them explaining my situation. She looked a few things up between their coupons and my goodrx gold account. She told me to have my doctor send in the generic and name brand prescriptions. In the pen and in the vials. So I come back a few days later and she worked with me again for me down to $105. I went back the next day to pick up my meds and she somehow got it down to free!! I did have to buy some syringes but it saved me a ton of money. There are good pharmacists out there 🥰

Generics have to have the same active ingredients but not the inactive ingredients. People’s bodies react differently to something as small as a higher/lower sodium content. Generics also don’t have to have the same release rate which can also affect people differently. As pharmacists they should know this! I also have autonomic dysfunction on top of adhd. Named brand Vyvanse releases faster and for some reason I get bad fatigue daily sometimes several times a day. I was switched to generic when they were out of name brand once and I only got fatigue like 2-3 times a week. Now it’s written in my file generic only and they always respect that.
