You guys! do not take “cripple” home with you. I have the lifetime membership and this is not your permission slip to start calling disabled people cripples. Behave! Lucky for me paralysis comes with a few linguistic privileges. Before anyone starts defending Switzerland like I insulted their grandmother let me be clear. I love Switzerland, it’s stunning and I had some really good accessibility experiences there I also spent hours with Alan trying to figure out how the trains would work for me and we still ended up standing in front of one I could not get on. That is exactly the problem, right? Accessible trains exist. That does not mean the train system is accessible You have to find the right train going the right direction at the right time with the right accessible car and enough space. Then you have to trust that the information you found is accurate and that what shows up is actually what you were expecting. That mental load is exhausting and I’m standing ten toes down on this one. Public transportation should actually work for the public Disabled people should not need a spreadsheet and a prayer circle just to figure out how to get across town. And yes Switzerland is doing real work on accessibility. I saw that. I tried to use those systems. I also saw the holes in them because there is a difference between access technically existing and access actually being easy to use There is also a difference between being able to get on a train independently and being able to get on because the right employee shows up with the right equipment at the right time. Help is lovely. Independence is better……you guys I just wanna mind my own business! I had people in Switzerland go out of their way for me and I am incredibly grateful for that. I had a wonderful trip and I would absolutely go back. I can appreciate the progress and still expect more. TBH I would not be very good at this whole disability advocacy biz if I looked at something that almost works and decided we should all just be grateful
