#tbt 22 July 2019 - The Official Video Of “Bohemian Rhapsody” hits over 1 billion views on YouTube. ✨“I always say it was six minutes that changed my whole life. It was also the greatest risk of Queen’s career. We never knew until the night of the show whether it would be played on TV. Once it aired it changed everything in music and how bands treated videos. I walked into the studio with no script, no storyline and just five minutes of prep with Freddie and the boys. ✨Everybody was very focused. There were no big egos, everyone was really easy-going. Freddie was very professional and knew exactly what he wanted. Everything was set up for their tour so they performed as they would in front of an audience – and it looked like they were. ✨Everyone thought a six-minute single was too long for TV or radio but the band were insistent it had to be that length, they refused to cut the song. The budget was £3,500 and I think £500 of that was mine. I didn’t get commission and was just a hired freelancer. We didn’t really know what things cost in those days as we weren’t used to doing videos. We had no idea if £3,500 was cheap or not. ✨They finished shooting at 10.30pm and all had a beer in their hands by 11pm. The footage was edited the next day and sent to the BBC the day after. ✨If I’d known how big the track was going to be and if we’d had more money and more time we would have made something that was a lot better than what it was. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ pioneered the music video. Musicians had tried before, but they didn’t have the impact Queen did.” ✨Filming this video may have been a risk, but it was only one among several the band made at that point — and given that they were in the middle of scoring an enormous hit with what was then the most expensive single in rock history, they were growing accustomed to those risks paying off.
