I recognized this after 28 years of marriage to my wife. Of course we change over time and our listening skills improved with implementing books like Feeling Good Together. We did have communication. However, I realized that my wife couldn’t recognize that I needed empathy too. I needed to admit she hurt me with her words and actions. She associated admitting wrong with being a bad person. She didn’t see herself as a bad person. The very thing happened, I would express myself, hoping I would receive empathy, understanding as she placed herself in my shoes. But it never happened. I cried out to God in prayer for her to understand. Praise God, the Holy Spirit did open her heart to understand. Once her was able to listen to my perspective and let me have my feelings our relationship went to another level of connection and intimacy. The Bible talks about a husband and wife being knit together. Today, three years later and 32 years into our marriage, we are closer, closer on a spiritual level.
