I’m going to say this in a nicer way than most Backrooms fans defending this movie as someone who enjoyed it and the YouTube series among other things. The Backrooms aren’t meant to be some kind of straightforward horror narrative that is spoon fed to you and has a clear concept. It’s okay to not know the lore or anything prior, but it’s quite silly to like comments hating on it as an incomplete body of work or something that is sub par simply because “you need to watch 20 YouTube shorts to understand it” when that’s not the case at all. It originated as an urban legend on the internet, based on an image of a liminal space and the whole point of the Backrooms since then has been to build on the dread and unknown nature of being lost in such a space. It’s a more unique indie horror concept than most stuff you’d probably been exposed to if you’re not deep into indie horror films or YouTube games or internet stuff. Different is okay. Not every single horror movie has to follow the same recipe as what we’re used to.
