Jurors in the murder trial of an ex-South Carolina gas station owner who shot and killed a 14-year-old boy saw video again this morning of the boy walking out of the store and the defendant, his wife and his son chasing after him. Prosecutor Dale Scott played the video during his 50-minute closing argument in which he told jurors the only just verdict is to convict Rick Chow of murder for fatally shooting Cyrus Carmack-Belton on May 28, 2023.
"This could have been it. He could have walked off," Scott said. "Let him go. Just let him go. We don't need to be here today. Let the boy go. What have you got to lose? Why not call 911. It takes one second," Scott said. Chow, his wife, Alice, and their son, Andy Chow, accused the boy of stealing bottled water, and Andy Chow testified he believed he'd left with something when he walked out of the store. Andy, 23, testified he only wanted to see where Cyrus was going so he could tell police, but the boy tripped and then pointed a gun at him and his father fired a shot to protect him. Other witnesses testified Cyrus never displayed the gun before he was shot. "He chose to chase down an eighth grader. The boy was so terrified that he ran out of his shoe and continued running. The boy was so terrified he's losing clothing. He drops his phone. He drops his mother's phone, but he continues running. Wouldn't that have been even another great opportunity for them to stop?" Scott told jurors today (Monday, June 1). "Listen, we scared this little boy so bad, he's come out of his shoe. Let's stop the insanity right here. Let's turn around. Let's take our butts back to the Shell gas station. What are we even doing, anyway? Why are we doing this?" Scott continued. "But no, they continue tracking him, chasing the boy down, and then he takes that hard fall, hits the ground. What about right then? Wouldn't that have been a good time to be like, 'We've scared this boy so bad that he's running out of his shoes, he's lost his cell phones, and now he's hurt himself. We've gone too far. We've gone too far.'" "Why in God's name are two grown men, one armed, chasing a child — because that's what he is — 130 yards. Why in God's name?" Scott said. You can watch Scott's entire argument on my YouTube channel. Chow's lawyer Shaun Kent is arguing now. The jury will begin deliberate today and likely will have a verdict today. #law #crime #court
