@vampire1x8: During the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqi Air Force conducted thousands of combat sorties deep inside Iranian territory, making it one of the largest air wars in the Middle East since World War II. The major air campaign began on September 22, 1980, when Iraq launched coordinated strikes against Iranian airbases and military infrastructure in an attempt to cripple the Iranian Air Force through a surprise attack inspired by the strategy of the 1967 Arab–Israeli War. Iraqi missions included:• Bombing Iranian airfields and military bases• Striking bridges and supply routes• Attacking oil refineries and ports• Providing close air support for ground forces• Conducting air-to-air combat missions• Participating in the “Tanker War” in the Persian Gulf The Iraqi Air Force operated a mix of Soviet and French aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, Su-22, Mirage F1, and Tu-22 bombers. By the late stages of the war, Iraq also introduced the MiG-29 into service. One of the most significant operations was the opening air assault of 1980, targeting Iranian bases in Hamadan, Tabriz, Kermanshah, and Ahvaz. Although the strikes caused damage, they failed to fully destroy Iran’s air capabilities. During the 1988 al-Faw campaign, Iraqi aircraft carried out intensive bombardment operations that played a major role in supporting the recapture of the peninsula.
