@various.archives: Born in the Netherlands and trained at ArtEZ Arnhem, Iris Van Herpen sharpened her eye through internships with Alexander McQueen in London and Dutch textile artist Claudy Jongstra in Amsterdam, then launched her label in 2007. In 2010 she became the first designer to send a 3D‑printed dress down the runway with the Crystallization collection, opening a door fashion had never walked through. A year later she was admitted as a guest member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, the youngest in her generation to enter that circle. Her practice reads less like fashion and more like a laboratory, built on long collaborations with architects Philip Beesley and Isaïe Bloch, MIT designer Neri Oxman, and material scientists who help her translate water, magnetism, skeletons and marine life into wearable form. The Met acquired her Skeleton dress in 2015; the Musée des Arts Décoratifs devoted a full retrospective to her work, Sculpting the Senses. If this is the kind of fashion history matters to you, Various Archives is built for people like you.
