How are farmers making nearly $22,000 an hour… but still going broke? THE GOOD 👍🏼
Modern farmers can plant an incredible amount of food in a very short time. At 32,500 seeds per acre, a good field might produce around 245 bushels of corn per acre. At $4.65 per bushel, that crop would be worth roughly $1,139 per acre. With a planter covering 20 acres an hour, that’s nearly $22,800 worth of corn planted every hour. Sounds like farmers are printing money, right? THE BAD 👎🏼
That number is gross revenue, not profit. Before a single bushel is sold, the farmer has already paid for seed, fertilizer, chemicals, fuel, equipment, repairs, insurance, interest, labor and increasingly expensive land. Those costs can consume every dollar the crop produces. Some estimates put corn losses near $87 per acre, even after farmers spend an entire season taking on the weather, market and production risk. THE UGLY ☹️ Chapter 12 farm bankruptcies jumped 46% in 2025. Farmers can generate thousands of dollars in crops every hour and still finish the year with less money than they started with. That should matter to everyone because once local farms disappear, they’re incredibly difficult to replace. How can YOU help? 🫵🏼 Buy locally when you can. Support policies that strengthen American agriculture. Learn who produces your food and what it actually costs to grow it. Farmers aren’t asking you to feel sorry for them. They’re asking for the opportunity to keep farming. #farm #education #farming #agriculture #shilohfarm
