Grandfather paradox. Going back and changing anything changes the time line and therefore resets the time line to original line.

I always liked the theory that big timeline changes don’t take effect until those who have left their present time are returned, this is why even in scenes where they’re in the future nothing changes for doc and Marty until they get back to 1985, now as for why doc doesn’t die when they get back to the new 1985 where he should be dead I like to imagine that both Marty and doc’s consistent exposure to the flux capacitor and time travel has given them some sort of immunity to timeline changes, now since we never see 2015 biff again I’m lead to just assume he has the same immunity somewhat as it’s my theory that you need 2 trips in the delorian to gain this immunity because Marty in the first film doesn’t have it after traveling back to 1955 with his parents never meeting and him ceasing to exist
