It's expanding into the void. I wish astrophysicist applied actual logic instead of magic/spirituality when looking at the Universe. The void is the exact same thing that is in between stars. It's just a 3 dimensional space that contains nothing. At the edge of the universe, stars and galaxies thin out, they're less dense. If you keep going you just end up surround by nothing. If you keep going further you'll find another patch of galaxies (another universe).

other than math that no one will ever understand, how do we know space is expanding opposed to objects simply moving faster than light. yes, I know nothing moves faster than light is the standard. but other than that assumption and at great mass and distance, how do we know it's space expanding and not objects moving?

I’m more curious about light. Since light is the fastest thing in the universe then some light should be able to escape the universe since said universe can’t be moving faster than it. Did the word universe lose its meaning lol?

Then isn't the universe expanding inside me? Doesn't that mean we're all getting bigger and wider and stokes are getting bigger, and the gaps between electrons/protons is getting bigger, and one day the universe just stops working?

the only piece that doesn't make sense to me is why solids like the Earth and everything on it aren't also expanding away from themselves. like why does the distance between me and my phone slowly get larger if space itself is inflating? do dark matter/antimatter and dark energy come into play here? space only expands in the vacuum?
