I'm glad the AI bubble appears to be cooling off sooner rather than later. If the hype had continued unchecked, it could have displaced a significant number of jobs. Companies are starting to realize that AI may be powerful, but it doesn't provide accountability in the way people do.
With employees, there are clear expectations and consequences. You can recognize great work, reward strong performance, coach people when they fall short, and ultimately hold someone accountable for outcomes. AI doesn't operate within that framework. If an AI system makes a costly mistake, who exactly is responsible? You can't motivate it, mentor it, or hold it accountable.
It may sound cynical, but human workers bring something beyond productivity: ownership and responsibility. When things go well, they deserve credit. When things go wrong, there is someone who can investigate, explain, and help fix the problem. That's a dimension of work that AI alone cannot replace.
