MED LINOK - MD :
An Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW) baby weighs less than 1,000 grams (2 pounds, 3 ounces) at birth. These infants are usually born very prematurely—often at 27 weeks of gestation or earlier. Due to the immaturity of their organs, they require specialized care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).Key Medical ChallengesBecause they are born before their bodies are fully developed, ELBW babies face several critical challenges:Respiratory Immaturity: Lungs are often underdeveloped, leading to conditions like Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). They frequently require mechanical ventilation and supplemental oxygen.Thermoregulation: ELBW babies lack body fat and the ability to regulate their temperature, requiring specialized incubators or radiant warmers to stay warm.Feeding and Digestion: Their digestive systems are extremely immature, making them susceptible to a dangerous condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). They initially require intravenous (IV) nutrition or a feeding tube.Infection Risk: Their immune systems are weak, making them highly vulnerable to serious infections (sepsis).Brain and Eye Development: The fragile blood vessels in the brain can bleed (intraventricular hemorrhage), and they are at risk for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), an eye disease that can cause vision loss.
