Here’s that jar from a few days ago you may have watched me throw the components of, (I’ll link that video below in case you’d like to watch how I threw the parts). This angular form, with an indented upper section, a tall, tapering base and a protruding line, has become one of my ‘quintessential’ forms, yet rarely do I make lidded versions, and it’s something I’ve desperately wanted to try for a while now. Mainly, as it’s an excuse to make a form where the line extends from body to lid, which makes it clear how the two pieces should be aligned. I should be more careful when throwing the lids for these. It of course need to slot into the body, yet this one overhangs far too much but throwing them excessively large is something I do out of fear of throwing them too narrow for the urn. Ideally, I’d like the lids shape to be a continuation of the body below, yet if I threw it too small there’s a chance it wouldn’t line up, destroying the continuity of body to lid and line. Thus, I throw it so it’s oversized, even if that means I have to do much more turning, as it means I know I’ll be able to achieve the shape I’m thinking of. What do you think? Should I start making more lined larger forms, like this? #pottery #jar #urn #craft #satisfying
