The demands on younger players is waaaaay higher in present time then 5-10 years ago. This is not an epidemic due to a child’s ability to self regulate but rather the sport not being developmentally appropriate. Calling them “cry babies” is very unprofessional.

I have three kids who do premiere/travel sports and I don’t think it’s about the kids and their stress response. I think it is is that young kids are being put under tremendous pressure by coaches and parents in a way they simply were not in past generations when these same kids would be playing rec league sports.

Is any of this attributed to parents telling their kids they are perfect or better than they actually are?

Too many games, not enough practices. Forced to specialize too early and no allowance for multi- sport opportunity. Win at all costs mentality with parents and coaches leading the way.

One thing I did to help with this is create an atmosphere of encouragement amongst the team. While running drills, the girls would call out good play, encourage girls who didn't successfully complete the drill. This bleeds into game times. Also, always remind them the team needs leaders. It's best to be an example of leadership. Reward this behavior and remind players and parents the importance of being coachable and being a good teammate

We need more player development and less playing games and competing non stop. It’s not good for the body nor the mind. Younger athlete need to learn how to focus on how to manage there emotions. Playing games all the time and competing doesn’t allow them to do that. It leads to suppression. Love the video❤️

I think this is mostly true but it’s more then stress response getting lower. The stakes are higher. It’s social media. Mistakes get memorialized and set to music for the world to see forever in opponents highlight reels.

💯 There’s a growing gap between competitive play and developmental milestones.

To many adults involved, AAU, Travel, Trainers, sports is no longer fun for kids. 🤷🏾 It's adults living through their young athletes. 😌

Or maybe they have a full range of emotions that previous generations were taught to suppress.

Maybe there is an epidemic of high stakes/high costs sports at a developmentally wrong age.
We need to chill the hell out on these kids and sports

These are the same kids who have been told since the womb “how awesome they are!!!”… what’s missing is their ability to take constructive criticism and use it as fuel

I have to ask are you saying cry baby athletes at the beginning as what’s being said or are you describing the situation as such?
