@qroo1l: I just finished listening to Matthew Perry’s autobiography, and the only word that comes to mind is: holy sh*t. What a wonderful person he was. First and foremost, I want to thank Macmillan for helping Matthew record this eight-hour narrative himself. There’s something - I don’t know - mesmerizing about listening to the life story of a person who is no longer with us, in his own words. To me, he was always something of an idol, but without the fanaticism. You know, the kind of person you don’t know personally, but you’re sure that if you spoke to him, you’d hit it off. And the whole time I was listening, it felt like therapy sessions to me. Many moments from his life, his thoughts, all that self-criticism-it felt familiar to me. Some might say that the battle with one’s own mind is far from the most important battle. This man fought with himself his whole life, and in a way, you could say he lost. But he also inspired thousands of people in the process of that battle, myself included. Chandler Bing became a cult character only thanks to Perry, whose improvisations made people laugh and will continue to do so; he brought joy to millions. The attempt is far more important than any outcome; one’s efforts cannot be undervalued. Perhaps a single failed life simply has a different purpose - so that one of us might hear and draw inspiration from that experience. Such is the balance of life. Honestly, I find great comfort in the thought that there is some order in all the chaos of the universe, that any failure is merely a necessity so that someone else might live a better life.
