I promised myself at 16 I wouldn't get pregnant until I had enough money saved/invested that I could be a stay at home parent. I'm 36, I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.

I’m a child of the 60s. Just a plumber, no degree, no higher education. I ran a small business, was mortgage-free by 50 and retired at 55. Despite a divorce and remarriage, both my ex-wife and I are still mortgage-free. Our two children did everything right. They got degrees, became professionals, and are both married. Yet the only reason they own homes is because their mum and I gave them our savings and most of my pension six years ago. They’re both over 35, with mortgages of £250k+ on modest semi-detached houses, and still feel they can’t afford to have children. My generation could buy a home and raise a family on a tradesman’s wage. Today, even two professional salaries, help from parents, and a huge mortgage often isn’t enough. That doesn’t feel like progress to me.

Radical idea: people who work hard should be admired, but people should NOT HAVE to work hard for basic things like a home and family and security. It’s hard enough as is.
