That money was contributed by almost 12 traders in our market for a business trip to Cotonou. He was the one they trusted to travel and buy goods for everyone because he was known as a quiet and honest boy. The day he left Lagos, everybody was calling him, praying for journey mercies, even my mother was proud that people finally trusted someone from our poor family with such responsibility. But two days later, his phone stopped going through. At first, we thought maybe network was bad. Then one week passed. Then two weeks. No calls. No message. Nothing. The market people came to our house every single day. Some insulted us. Some threatened to arrest my mother. One woman swore she would collect our house if her money was not returned. My mother cried every night. People started calling my brother a thief. Even children in the street mocked our family. I was angry too because I believed he had ruined our lives. Then one evening, after almost 4 months, I got a strange call from a private number. The voice was weak.

My mother cried every night. People started calling my brother a thief. Even children in the street mocked our family. I was angry too because I believed he had ruined our lives. Then one evening, after almost 4 months, I got a strange call from a private number. The voice was weak. "Brother... please don't cut the call.' It was him. I nearly fainted. He was crying heavily. What he told me that night shocked me to my bones. On his way back from Cotonou, armed robbers attacked the vehicle he entered at night. They collected everything from passengers and shot two people. My brother was badly injured and left unconscious near the road. A local farmer found him and took him to a small clinic in a village near the border. Since the robbers had taken his phone, money, and bag, nobody knew who he was. He couldn’t even remember numbers because of the injury to his head. For weeks, he was drifting in and out of consciousness. When he finally became better, shame did not allow him return home immediately because he knew nobody would believe his story. He said every day he wanted to come back, but fear kept holding him. I cried like a child that night. The next morning, I brought him home. When my mother saw him, she screamed and fainted. The same neighbours insulting us before suddenly became quiet. Today, my brother is back on his feet. It took us almost 3 years of hard work to repay everybody little by little. Some people forgave part of the debt after hearing the truth, others didn’t. But one thing I learned is this, Sometimes, the person everybody calls a wicked person may actually be fighting a battle nobody knows about. Life can change in one night."
