You might not pay 50% in payroll tax but when you add 20-25% payroll tax, 3% property tax, 1% school tax, 1% MUD, $900/mo healthcare ins., HOA fees, toll road fees and sales tax when you buy things, you find the US is averaging 55-60% in “taxes”

"where did half my salary go" it's gone to your boss already before tax. Profit is the unpaid labour of the working class. Capitalists when their system is in crisis they try to make the working class pay even more through cuts to services inflation and so on while the biggest corporations are making record profits.
